"I think what motivates you is whatever will make you happy for the next week."
A cold beer. A hot bath. Mary Oliver. Wendell Berry. Patty Griffin. Harper's slow-blossoming smile. West Wing. Sun-gold tomatoes. Hope. Absurdity. Whimsy. You. An idea for a poem. Basil-stained fingers. Planning a trip. Bread in the oven. A job well done. The first page of a book. The last page of a book. Songs the depressed sing. Finding a grey hair. Picking wild blackberries. Thorn-slashed legs. The swish-swish-swish of my boss's pants as she walks quickly away. Good scotch. Dreams of old friends. Love letters. Letters. Words. The smell of paper. Listening to the merciful pray. Cooking without a recipe. Occasional insomnia. Fabric softener. Unexpected laughter. A few hours alone. A day spent with Harper. The never-ending miracle of the I-Pod. Grocery store clerks. You. Imagining that fireflies are fairies. Imagining that fairies are real. My daughter's voice on the phone. My sister's voice in my house. The act of lighting a candle. The way peaches smell. You. Photographs of the days when I was happy. A map of sun-burned creases on the back of a man's neck. The very last tear falling. The thumping sound made on wood floors as I hobble out a broken-downÂ
peg-legged waltz. And you. You. You.
I have reply-blogged. Also, my neighbor is looking for a travel case for his Scotch. He thinks he misplaced it but according to him, the soft leather-bound case was able to hold a full bottle as well as mixing accessories and was his closest companion on his travels back and forth from Bakersfield. If you find it, please contact AA's lost and found division - 800-LST-CAUS.
